Geospatial Information System (GIS)

Introduction to GIS focuses on the theory and application of GIS technology. The course combines theory and practical assignments in an effort to provide students with the knowledge required to plan and undertake a project with a GIS component. The course uses ESRI ArcGIS for practical assignments to illustrate theoretical concepts. The course will focus on a brief introduction to GIS, map projections, data integration, types of spatial data and the tools, technology, and utilities available to work with spatial data. The students are required to bring a sample set of spatial data or a GIS related component (after the first lecture/lab), discuss their data and build a case study in class. Students will get assistance finding additional data to build and improve the case study. The students will also be given the opportunity to present the case study to the GIS community at Notre Dame at the end of the course. Students will also be shown how to access and use ESRI ArcGIS from their lab/office computers.
